The Computer Security Incident Response Team of the Nigerian Communications Commission invited users of the Zoom videotelephony platform to install the latest software update from its publisher’s officer following the discovery of vulnerabilities that allowed a remote attacker to exploit the application.
According to NCC Director of Public Affairs Reuben Muoka on Thursday, he noted that in a statement issued on Wednesday, the NCC-CSIRT reported that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team discovered several flaws in the Zoom product.
The video telephony platform has become popular for virtual meetings in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic with more than three hundred million daily users.
According to the NCC-CSIRT advisory, a remote attacker can exploit vulnerabilities to bypass security measures and cause a denial of service on the target machine.
He noted: “These vulnerabilities exist due to an improper implementation of access in the local Zoom Meeting Connector MMR prior to release 4. 8. 20220815. 130. A remote attacker can simply exploit those vulnerabilities to check into a meeting they can’t attend. without other participants noticing. They can also access audio and video streams of assemblies they could not attend, as well as interrupt other sessions.
Successful exploitation of those vulnerabilities can allow an unauthorized remote authenticated user to bypass the security limitations implemented on the target system.
The Computer Security Incident Response Team is the telecommunications sector cybersecurity incident center established through the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecommunications sector and, to the extent possible, telecommunications consumers and citizens in general. The CSIRT also works in collaboration with the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team, established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of cyber threat incidents in the long term by preparing, securing and securing Nigerian cyberspace to prevent attacks and disruptions or similar events.
