The Windows Sound Recorder app has gone through a few iterations since its initial release in Windows 3. 0 in 1990, when it was introduced as an undeniable app that can only record 60 seconds of audio at a time. But the app has completely disappeared in Windows 10, replaced through a new logo app called Voice Recorder, which can record and trim fundamental sound recordings and save them as m4a files.
Sound Recorder is now back and Microsoft is recently testing a revamped edition for Windows Insiders on the Dev channel. The company announced the redesign in a blog post summarizing Windows 11 updates for built-in Windows apps.
The new sound recorder uses a two-column layout similar to that of the voice recorder, with playback and crop controls on the right and a list of all stored files on the left. But it adds some old sound recorder features that disappeared from the app. years ago, when they were reduced to almost nothing in Windows Vista.
The app has a waveform viewer that appears to record and play, and you can again decide to save or open files in multiple formats (including the default mfoura, as well as mp3, wma, FLAC, and WAV). The new sound recorder can also set the audio playback speed from 0. 25x to four and set markers so that you can seamlessly transfer from one position to another in a giant audio recording.
This is the first time Windows 11 has revived the call of an old Windows app while retaining the UI and features of a new Windows 10 app. The new Windows Media Player has much more in common with the Groove Music app than with Windows 7 Media. Player, and Windows 11 Snipping tool is a famous edition of what Windows 10 used to call Snip
Windows 11 has also updated a bunch of built-in Windows apps that didn’t attract attention since the days of Windows 7 or even earlier, adding Paint and Notepad.
