At a Build convention on Monday, Microsoft unveiled a new AI-powered feature called “Reminder” for PC Copilot that will allow Windows 11 users to search for and perform additional activities on their PCs. To make this work, Recall logs everything users do. their PCs, adding in-app activities, live meeting communications, and internet sites visited for study purposes. Despite encryption and local storage, the new feature raises privacy considerations for some Windows users.
“Recall uses Copilot PC’s complex processing features to take pictures of your active screen every few seconds,” Microsoft says on its website. “Snapshots are encrypted and stored on your PC’s hard drive. You can use Recall to locate the content you’ve seen on your PC or in a timeline bar that allows you to scroll through your snapshots. “
By performing a callback action, users can access a snapshot of an express time period, offering context for the occasion or moment they’re looking for. It also allows users to search via teleconference for meetings they’ve attended and videos viewed in an AI-based system. A feature that transcribes and translates speech.
At first glance, the callback feature opens the door to potential blatant violations of user privacy. Despite Microsoft’s assurances, this impression also persists at this time and in a third look. For example, if you have access to your Windows account, you can prospectively use Recall to see everything you’ve been doing recently on your PC, which can go beyond the embarrassing implications of watching pornography and threatening the lives of journalists or supposed enemies of the state.
Despite privacy concerns, Microsoft claims that the Recall index remains local and user on the device, encrypted in tactics that are tied to a specific user’s account. “Recall screenshots are only connected to an express user profile and Recall does not share them with others” Screenshots are only available to the user whose profile you used to sign in to the device,” Microsoft says.
Users can pause, stop, or delete captured content and exclude apps or sites from Internet express. The callback will not take snapshots of InPrivate internet browsing sessions in Microsoft Edge or DRM-protected content. However, Recall will not actively hide sensitive data such as passwords and monetary account numbers that appear on the screen.
Microsoft has in the past explored a similar feature with Windows 10’s Timeline feature, which the company discontinued in 2021, but it hasn’t taken snapshots nonstop. Recall it also shares some apparent similarities with Rewind, a third-party app for Mac discussed in 2022 that records user activities for later playback.
As you can imagine, all this snapshot storage comes with a hardware penalty. To use Recall, users will need to purchase one of the new “Copilot Plus PCs” powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips, which come with the mandatory neural processing unit. (NPU). There are also minimum storage requirements to run Recall, with a minimum of 256 GB of hard disk space and 50 GB of available space. The default allocation for Recall on a 256 GB device is 25 GB, which can store approximately 3 months of snapshots. Users can adjust the allocation in their PC settings, and old snapshots are deleted once the assigned garage is full.
As for availability, Microsoft says Recall is still being tested. “Lately, Recall is in preview status,” Microsoft says on its website. “During this phase, we will collect visitor feedback and expand more controls for business consumers to manage and control the recovery. data and the overall user experience.
