Widespread on YouTube amid Russian criticism

Russia’s web tracking services on Thursday reported thousands of problems with the availability of video hosting site YouTube, amid growing complaints from Russian authorities. Users have said that access to YouTube is only imaginable through virtual personal networks (VPNs).

“YouTube doesn’t work,” an anonymous user commented on the site. Reuters journalists showed that they could not access YouTube in Russia and that some mobile devices retained access.

Within weeks, YouTube download speeds have dropped significantly. Russian lawmakers blamed Google’s YouTube for the situation, a claim the company disputes.
