Apple’s latest iPhone software update has so many new features that you might miss some if you don’t know where to look. For example, in iOS 16, Apple added a new Duplicates folder in the Photos app.
Earlier this week, Apple posted a document on its particular online page for owners who can’t locate the Duplicates album. As Apple points out, the Duplicates album will only appear after your iPhone indexes your photo library and discovers the duplicates.
Before you rush to an Apple Store for a repair, read this from Apple:
The detection procedure requires the iPhone to lock and connect to the power source. Depending on the responsibilities running in the background and the duration of your photo library, the procedure may take time temporarily or up to a few days.
Another vital detail that Apple didn’t include: the Duplicates album may not show up at all unless you have duplicate images and videos on your iPhone. I just merged the only two duplicate images in my non-public photo library. The album disappeared when I went back to the menu Álbumes. Es possible that your library no longer has duplicates.
Considering the number of bugs in iOS 16, it’s understandable that some users think the feature doesn’t work. Fortunately, it works as expected. You may want to leave the bulk index of your phone’s photo library before you can use it.
