“We want to challenge a prestige quo component of how we build solar installations,” says Chris Shelton, AES Technical Director at GTM.

Last week, Fortune 500 energy company AES added a new start-up to the solid in target energy development it supports.

AES bought a 25% stake in 5B, an Australian company that generates prefabricated solar panels that enlarge like an accordion when installed on the site. It’s a solar innovation that AES CEO Andrés Gluski tells GTM “could be massive” as it is deployed on a giant scale.

5B claims that its offsite solar panels, then transported for immediate construction, are 3 times faster to install than a classic single-axis tracking formula. Since the formula uses aisles or panels in spaces between 25 and 50% smaller than the more classic formulas, the company also claims that its product, called Maverick, produces between 40 and 45% more power depending on the square foot.
