Warner Bros Discovery shuts down Cartoon Network’s website

As part of another cost-cutting initiative, Warner Bros. Discovery announced the closure of Cartoon Network’s website. The announcement follows WBD’s announcement in its quarterly earnings report of a $9. 1 billion impairment rate at its former television unit. In recent years, cable networks have lost profits due to a drop in distribution prices due to cable cuts, which has led to a drop in subscribers and audiences.

A stopover on Cartoon Network’s online page read: “Looking for episodes of your favorite Cartoon Network shows?Find out what’s available to stream on Max (subscription required). Sign up for Max, where you can also create a child profile with more rating restrictions and privacy protections to make it fun and kid-friendly!

The message also noted existing cable subscribers can use the “connected apps” as well as watching programs on television. Besides their app, the Cartoon Network content can be accessed on such social media websites as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram as well as on connected TV devices including Roku, Apple TV and Amazon.

Currently, the Cartoon Network cable channel is present in less than a portion of American television families (compared to 87% in 2011). The cable network broadcasts content daily from 6 a. m. to 7 p. m. to 5 p. m. WBD’s Adult Swim showcase airs daily from five p. m. at 6 a. m.

As children’s viewing behavior continues to eschew linear television in favor of on-demand streaming, audiences for Cartoon Network and other kid-targeted cable networks like Disney Channel and Nickelodeon have lost attention. As of July 2024, Cartoon Network averaged 74,000 viewers during its broadcast day, ranking 43rd overall.

Despite the rumors, no announcement has been made that the cable television network will cease operations. Cartoon Network began operations in October 1992 with an extensive (and classic) library of animated programming from Turner Broadcasting. The network also added original programming.

A spokesperson for the network said: “We are focusing on Cartoon Network’s screens and social media, where we see consumers being more engaged and there is significant potential for expansion. The Cartoon Network website was introduced in July 1998 (an earlier edition of the online page was published through AOL in 1996). At this time, the websites of other WBD cable networks are still operational.

In the past, cartoonnetwork. com featured clips and single episodes from the cable network. According to Variety, among the exhibits that were featured were Adventure Time, Craig of the Creek, The Amazing World of Gumball, Teen Titans GO!, Steven Universe, We Bare Bears, and Clarence. The online page also featured single video games from several of its programs.

Additionally, earlier this month, WBD announced the closure of Boomerang’s standalone subscription streaming channel effective September 30. The cost of Boomerang’s monthly subscription is $5. 99. The content will be available in Max. La classic Boomerang animated fare included Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and The Flintstones. Boomerang’s streaming service was introduced seven years ago. The cable network, which will reach approximately 23 million homes with television, will continue to operate.

In June, Paramount Global, another financially troubled media company, as part of a cost-cutting measure, shuttered MTV News with more than 20 years of content, as well as thousands of Comedy Central music videos. Paramount recently announced a $6 billion cancellation of its cable networks.

Last February, after the layoffs, Paramount announced the closure of Noggin, a subscription video-on-demand service for young people under seven years old. Content included with games, books and educational videos, adding Blues Clues.
