The next edition of Ubuntu will use its own netbook interface of the open source GNOME desktop system, according to Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth.

Speaking at an Ubuntu convention today, Shuttleworth said Ubuntu 11.04, dubbed Natty Narwhal, will feature Unity as the default interface, users can still transfer to the GNOME shell.

“We are committed to the biggest update on the desktop,” Shuttleworth said at the conference, according to a report published through ComputerWorld. “Unity will be the default, when we’re sure it’s going to work.”

“I’m going to get ahead of a vital question: Unity is a shell for GNOME even if it’s not a GNOME shell,” he says. “We are committed to the principles and values of GNOME”.

Why Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition for iPad?

An imaginable explanation for why the update is that GNOME 3 will not arrive until March, while Natty Narwhal is expected to be introduced in April 2011. This would not give Canonical enough time to verify the new interface, even if it arrives on time.

Shuttleworth also stated that Unity was more touch-sensitive and had more power from manufacturers.

Unity designed as the user interface for Ubuntu Netbook Edition and Ubuntu Light, which was created for instant devices.
