Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke has been banned from Twitter for violating site regulations prohibiting hate speech on the social media platform.
The company said Friday that Duke’s account “was permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter’s hateful behavior regulations.”
He did not specify precisely what Duke published that triggered the ban, however, his hate speech policy prohibits the promotion of violence or threats of attacks on others because of his devout affiliation, race, and ethnicity.
Twitter said the ban was in line with its recently updated policy to reduce destructive links. Under the new rules, the company may suspend accounts committed to sharing hateful content or that attempt to circumvent its locks by sharing links to content.
Duke, the leader of white supremacist KKK from 1974 to 1978.
