Donald J. Trump’s media strategy can be summed up in a word addressed to one of his former enemies, the logorrheic mayor of New York, Ed Koch: inescapable for commentary.

Indeed, the former president has seemed that way in the month since President Biden ceded the Democratic ticket to Vice President Kamala Harris, ending a crusade in which Trump was once certain he would win easily.

Ms. Harris dominated the national verbal exchange even though she generally distanced herself from reporters and refused to hold a news conference. Eager to assert himself, Trump embarked on a cavalcade of interviews in venues large and small, appearing on a gaming celebrity’s streaming page, calling at a drive-in movie theater in New York and being courted from his vacation homes in Florida and New Jersey. . His appearances, however, involve sympathetic interviewers who rarely question his comments and intersperse questions with plenty of praise.

The effects have been mixed. Fans enjoyed his appearances and Trump’s press meetings were broadcast live on cable channels. But he also sparked controversies that his followers were quick to gloss over, like when he told Elon Musk that some strikers would be fired.

A pattern of the month from Trump’s media:

Date: July 30.

Interviewer: Sid Rosenberg, a veteran New York radio host who rose to fame as a direct commentator on the Don Imus exhibit (from which he was eventually fired for making offensive comments).
