Faridabad police on Monday arrested 3 gang members, who allegedly blackmailed at least 25 men after befriending them on Grindr, a social media app for gay, bisexual and transgender people, by recording their reprehensible videos and extorting them, police said Tuesday. .
The suspects were known as Vishal Kumar (22), Karan Singh (19) and Puneet aka Pony (23), all citizens of Gandhi’s settlement in Faridabad. Nitesh Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, NIT, said there were five members in the gang and that the mastermind, Rakesh alias Bidi, and his associate Jaibir alias Vicky Chandela had not yet been found.
Aggarwal said the suspects were targeting other people in a way that was reluctant to deceive police. “They created fake accounts on Grindr to link them to the victims,” he said.
The gang’s modus operandi was to interact with the sick, call them to any hotel or remote stretch after exchanging a few calls and messages, and capture intimate images. Soon after, the other gang members would break into the rooms or manage to the scene, take the victims at gunpoint and steal their belongings, police said.
Sethi Malik, the inspector who arrested the suspects, said the incident broke out on May 22 after an NIT resident complained that gang members extorted ₹2. 90 lakh from him. The suspects created a profile on the app and befriended the victim. After talking and talking for a few days, they asked him to meet on May 11. One of the suspects took him into a room and greeted his assistants, who recorded them in a compromising position and then broke into the room. They held the victim at gunpoint and threatened to upload photos to social media. They also threatened to send the videos to his family, friends and relatives,” Malik said.

Police said they monitored the suspects’ cell phone numbers, tracked their location and arrested them on Gandhi’s agreement in Faridabad.
Aggarwal said the gang members had been active for a year and had robbed at least 25 men. “Victims, fearing social stigma, are not in a position to take legal action against suspects and have refused to come forward and record their statements. We wrote to Grindr to get more important points about the suspects and their accounts. The gang basically targeted other people in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad,” he said.
