Earlier today, Microsoft released its Tuesday patch updates for Windows 10 (KB5028166) and Windows 11 (KB5028185). The company, on its fitness dashboard website, made an accompanying announcement that it has implemented its current hardening phase against BlackLotus UEFI. Bootkit security flaw (interestingly, the source code was also leaked, almost simultaneously).
The latest update adds the newest SafeOS dynamic update packages for WinRE (KB5028312, KB5028314 on Windows 11, and KB5028311 on Windows 10) and facilitates automated deployment of Secure Boot DBX revocation files. Microsoft’s Secure Boot DBX database is necessarily a block list for blacklisted UEFI executables. which have proven to be dangerous. Microsoft also revoked several WHQL-signed drivers that were malware with the most recent patch on Tuesday.
And there’s more smart news. The most recent patch Tuesday also corrects a mouse stutter factor that resulted from a Windows 11 clash with the mouse’s highest polling rates. Microsoft had announced in the past that it had addressed the factor in its full annual functionality report. Microsoft explained:
The Windows input stack was pushed to the limit with high-proportion mice, and their input not only passed into the game, but also into various background processes. In turn, this resulted in a significant amount of input processing time rather than offering as many cycles as you can imagine to deliver the gaming experience.
We reduce the processing time needed to service input requests by restricting and merging the uncooked mouse headset in the background and limiting its message rate. Before those changes, we looked at a Surface Laptop Studio with a 1000Hz mouse, a listener testbed in the background, and popular games where there was significant stuttering. After the improvements, in the same configuration, we now offer a sleek and uninterrupted gaming experience and maintain the low-latency, high-accuracy input experience in games while being effective with input for listeners in the background!
Microsoft first delivered the expired Windows 11 Preview Update last month, build 22621. 1928 (KB5027303). The release note reads “New! This update improves the functionality of your PC when you use a mouse that has a higher ratio rate for gaming.
