It’s not unusual for PC brands to offer the same computer with other processor options. But we are talking about chips from the same family, such as Intel Core i3, ifive or i7 or AMD Ryzen 3, five or 7.
But the new StarBook 7 computer from Linux PC vendor Star Labs is all different. This is a 14-inch computer with a 4K display that comes with either an Intel N200 Alder Lake-N processor or an Intel Core Ultra 7 165H Meteor Lake processor. Prices start at $713 and $1,449, respectively.
That’s a pretty big gap, but the Intel N200 processor is a budget-friendly chip for affordable laptops and mini PCs. It is a 6-watt, 4-core, 4-thread processor with 6MB of cache, supporting CPU frequencies up to 3. 7GHz and Intel UHD graphics.
Meanwhile, the Core Ultra 7 165H processor is a 28-watt, 16-core, 22-thread chip with CPU frequencies up to 5GHz, 24MB of cache, Intel Arc graphics, and an NPU for hardware-accelerated AI performance.
Both versions of the model feature a 14-inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel IPS LCD display with a matte finish and a matte black aluminum chassis. And both have user-upgradeable memory and storage.
But the Intel N200 model comes with 8GB to 32GB of single-channel DDR4-3200 memory and 512GB to 2TB of PCIe Gen 3 storage, while models with Core Ultra 7 chips range from 32GB to 96GB. of dual-channel DDR5 memory and 512 GB to 2 TB of single memory. Four-channel DDR4-3200 memory. PCIe Gen 4 storage.
Ports include:
The computer also features a 1080p webcam, a 65Wh battery and a 65W power adapter, a backlit keyboard with media keys available in various other language configurations, and an Intel AX210 wireless card that supports WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5. 3.
Star Labs offers the computer a selection of operating systems that add Ubuntu, Elementary OS, Linux Mint, Manjaro, MX Linux, Zorin OS and. . . Windows 11 if you’re willing to pay extra to install it.
According to the Star Labs website, the newly unveiled StarBoook 7 is “sold out,” but you can sign up to be notified when it becomes available for purchase.

Hi Brad, thank you for sharing this data this weekend. I can temporarily upload some data to clear up some confusion. I was hoping to have a full release on Friday, but since this is Starlabs, we overflowed. Sean launched the updated site over the weekend and hasn’t opened orders. still (our platform says it’s out of stock) and I just spotted a typo: “StarBoook 7”. The color is Pantone 433 and not black, and today I have new product photos on my table!

Obviously, this is not a criticism, I’m satisfied that other people like you care so much about Linux! The poor execution of my component generated a bit of uncertainty. Thanks for that, more data will be coming soon! Best Odin @ Starlabs

yes, but at $713, they ended that advantage. Chaining a small N200 to this beloved 14-inch 3840 x 2160 pixel IPS LCD display, which consumes a lot of power, is really a very bad idea!On the N200 device, they deserve to use a reasonable non-touch matte demonstration of 1366 × 768. the N200 device to use a twelve-inch non-touch matte, 1366 × even less expensive 768, demonstrate and sell the device for less than $300, and they’re going to ship millions of small, rugged laptops to the school market overnight. But doing something out of the ordinary like that is outside the realm of today’s avid, non-technical MBAs.
A 1366 x 768 screen is terrible, especially 14 inches. Additionally, Intel UHD graphics work well with 4K displays. The graphics on my old Samsung Galaxy 4K Chromebook were great, the challenge was cooling (which this device possibly wouldn’t have). I also thought $713 was a bit steep at first, but if you can show me a $750 device with 16GB of RAM and a 14-inch 4K display somewhere else, luckily I’ll take advantage of it.
The other challenge is that a company like Star Labs will never be able to ship millions of reasonable laptops, functionally rival Chromebooks, to the school market while maintaining their competitive value. They have already sold this series of machines. In this way, HP is already making $300 N200 machines with bad screens. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel.
However, I wish the N200 machines had a 2560 x 1440 display option. This is a useful upgrade from a 1080p display, while also reducing some prices from the final product and also being a bit simpler for the igpu. However, I perceive that they are instead positioning it as the cheapest 4K computer you can get from a remotely known brand, and they probably saved money and hassle by getting all their screens from one place.
As the owner of one of those $300 HP N200 machines with “bad screens”, I disagree. The one they gave me has a 1080p IPS screen that makes it look like 300 nits, 99%. srgb demonstrates. That’s more than enough to take daily notes on your cell phone and surf the Internet. A 1440p screen would be dead for me as I get older and my eyesight deteriorates, I find myself with 125-150% screen scaling even at 1080p.
This HP device can also be deliciously upgraded with a true SO-DIMM, NVME slot, and even multiple cooling options. It’s hard to beat it at this point of value. The only thing you might want is a bigger battery. At 43 Wh, it’s fine. A 65 Wh would be very smart and worth paying more. A great aluminum spark plug chassis with that?$450 would be a good value if they replaced the 4K display with a less expensive 1080p display. $500 maximum. Definitely not $713, 4K screen or not.
I agree one hundred percent that a company like Star Labs will never be able to compete with corporations like Acer or HP in their lowest tier of laptops. It would be unwise of you to try to compete with your biggest BOM discounts and optimized cutouts.
One thing to note about the N100/N200: don’t be fooled by the 6W TDP spec sheet. All of the client devices I’ve looked at have BIOS settings that allow those chips to run at 18-19W if you give them enough cooling. Even the HP laptop.
“But the Intel N200 processor is a budget chip for budget laptops and mini PCs”
Fun fact: the N200 beats the Intel Core i7-1060NG7 in the 2020 MacBook Air. Which of course means it beats the Core i5 and Core i3 editions. As long as you’re not gaming or editing videos, it should be fine for most people. If you pay $25 more for the edition with 16GB of RAM, you can even use it for the Android app and front-end online page progression. In fact, people have used the MacBook Air Core i5 and Core i7 for this, as well as iOS app progression and even Final Cut Pro.
Yes, that’s 4 years of technological progression. It’s worth noting, however, that Star Labs needs $700 for what it aims to be a device with a budget chip.
