Streaming services. . . don’t like science fiction. The genre has fallen out of favor since Disney made endless Star Wars series, as early shows were cancelled, either reaching their natural end or being eliminated in their prime. Their overhead is often incredibly high, along with the elaborate visual effects or backgrounds needed to bring them to life, making them difficult for streamers to handle unless they are over-performing. And often this is not the case.
Enter Silo, the Apple TV series that just had its season finale, which I would argue makes it the sci-fi screen on TV right now, even with the limited group.
Silo is in the Wool series via Hugh Howey, and the series stars Mission Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson as a new sheriff looking to uncover the fact that there are 10,000 humans trapped underground in a long vertical silo. the external one is poisonous enough to kill you in 30 seconds.
Despite the lack of spaceships, it’s a wonderful sci-fi and reminds the audience of Fallout’s many vaults, but without the weird humor of this series (and a genuine Fallout series is coming).
Silo’s ending (spoilers follow) was pretty mind-blowing, as Ferguson’s Juliette Nichols figured out a way to get outdoors, without being sabotaged by the mayor of Silo like so many others. The final shot is a wide panorama, revealing countless other exits from Silo. around him in a desolate wasteland, likely destroyed by nuclear weapons, raising a host of questions about what’s to come.
Apple has the largest number of quality sci-fi shows on television today. Besides Silo, there’s For All Mankind and Foundation, and I guess Severance, if you can, is a safe sci-fi spot. Amazon, Netflix, and HBO have produced many wonderful sci-fi series, including The Expanse, Altered Carbon, and Raised by Wolves. Netflix offers Stranger Things, the highest-profile sci-fi showcase on television, but for my money, Silo’s first season tops most seasons. from Stranger Things, even if it’s a little apples and oranges. As for Disney, the only genuine competitor to the Star Wars group is probably Andor.
For some reason, Apple seems to know how to tame high-quality sci-fi projects, unlike its competitors, who continue to abandon them en masse for the most part. Silo is the example of this and an attractive watch for everyone.
