Discussions similar to regulations for telecommunications infrastructure will continue with the Fountain Hills Planning and Zoning Commission at its meeting on Monday, May 13.

Developmental Services Director John Wesley said staff and the commission obtained orders from the council to review the criteria for small wireless cell towers to control proliferation in the city. As the debate evolved, the focus shifted to advancing underground broadband cable services, to decline. the need for wireless broadband.

Citizen considerations similar to wireless technology come with suitability issues due to microwave radiation, as well as the potential for towers to be built on the right-of-way of residential assets without any recourse to property owners.

Staff made amendments to a draft order at the April assembly and will submit it for a public hearing and review through the Commission.

The commission will also submit a proposed amendment to the ordinance to allow the installation of canopies in front and side yards facing the street. A citizen recently proposed an allowance to cover a deck in the front yard, which lately is not allowed. The application was submitted to the Reparation Council, which rejected the objection.

Staff have since proposed that such a terrace structure has benefits and have proposed an amendment to the ordinance. The following text is presented for discussion: “Patio canopies would possibly be assigned to a required front rear patio or a rear rear patio facing the street up to one-half (1/2) of the required setback, up to 12 1/2 feet . . . , and possibly not to exceed 12 feet. Overhead, covered terraces in front or street frontage cannot be enclosed by the full width of the lot. must exceed 20% of the width of the deck aspect and must be designed to maintain an unobstructed view of the street and not obstruct the view Covered decks in a rear front yard may not be used as a carport, garage or. storage room.

Staff will provide the annual report on the implementation of the 2020 Fountain Hills Corporate Plan.

The Urban Planning and Territorial Planning Commission will meet on Monday, May 13 at 6 p. m. in the auditorium of the City Hall. The assembly is open to the public and is also livestreamed. The schedule packet can be found on the city’s website, Fountainhillsaz. gov/time table.
