If you thought 2023 and 2024 were smart years for gaming, skip ahead to 2025 because it may be the most exciting year for the current generation of consoles. We get tried-and-true franchise sequels, ambitious new concepts from the get-go, developers, and plenty of surprises.
These are the biggest games releasing in 2025.
Almost a decade after the last entry, a new Dynasty Warriors will arrive on current-gen consoles. The upcoming game will use the strength of consoles to display thousands of enemies on screen and tell the story of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in more depth. Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be released on January 17, 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Citizen Sleeper, an exclusive RPG set in an equally cool environment. Its upcoming sequel expands on the game’s mechanics, allowing you to go on expeditions with team members. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector launches on January 31 for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S.
If you love fighting against giant titans in Shadow of the Colossus, keep an eye out for Eternal Strands. Developed by Canadian studio Yellow Brick Games, Eternal Strands is an action-adventure game that lets players fight against towering giants with elemental magic. You can use weather-based magic attacks to destroy and manipulate the environment and climb on the backs of the villainous “Arks”. Eternal Strands will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
Warhorse Studios will release its highly anticipated sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance in February, set in a larger open world that recreates 15th century Bohemia with more immersive role-playing systems while continuing Henry’s story. Our hero is in a position to wage war with the Holy Roman Emperor. Sigismund. Kingdom Come: Deliverance will be released on February 4, 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
4X strategy fans can still pick up Sid Meier’s Civilization VII this year, which includes big changes to its addictive and winning formula. Civ 7 ditches multiple ages and will now be set to 3 default ages. Now you can combine and unite leaders from other civilizations in fun simulation scenarios. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on February 11, 2025.
Obsidian Entertainment will offer its edition of Skyrim’s RPG systems with Avowed, which will take place in the world of Pillars of Eternity. The game will allow players to move between first- and third-person perspectives as they investigate a mysterious plague on Eora as an envoy of the Aedyr Empire. Like Skyrim, players admitted to transferring between magical weapons and melee weapons to combat enemies with customizable settings. Releases announced on February 18, 2025 on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Goro Majima returns to the center stage in a wacky pirate adventure in this new Yakuza spinoff. Set after the events of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the game will follow an amnesiac Majima as he finds himself stuck between the quarrels of modern-day pirates, complete with an Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Blag-inspired naval combat system. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii releases on February 21, 2025, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
Monster Hunter Wilds is Capcom’s first game in the franchise for current-gen consoles. Set in a new location with new monsters, Wilds features a new mount type, new monsters, an advanced wound system, a focus mode, and a new tool called the Hook Launcher. That’s all MH World and much more. Monster Hunter Wilds will launch on February 28, 2024 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The hilarious Two Point franchise returns with a new game set in everyone’s favorite management sim setting: a museum. In it, players will have to manage their museum, send people on expeditions to bring new historical artifacts, organize tours, and generally try to control the chaos. Two Point Museum releases on March 4, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Announced at The Game Awards, Split Fiction is the upcoming cooperative adventure game from Hazelight Studios, creators of It Takes Two. In it, you play with a friend through levels of action and platforming that alternate between fantasy and sci-fi worlds. It turns out that Split Fiction features even more game systems with a greater focus on cooperative play. Split Fiction launches on March 6, 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is finally taking players to a much-requestion location in history: Feudal Japan. Players will finally be able to role-play as a ninja and a samurai with Shadows’ dual protagonists. The upcoming RPG is also bringing the focus back to the franchise’s roots with improved stealth and parkour. Assassin’s Creed Shadows releases on March 20, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
At first glance, Atomfall looks like a British Fallout clone, and that’s not far from the truth. Developed through Rebellion, Atomfall is a first-person action-survival game set after the Windscale nuclear mistakes in northern England. . Atomfall launches on Match 27, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The life simulation genre has seen many games come and go, but few can boast the graphical consistency of inZOI. The hyper-realistic life simulation from PUBG parent company Krafton will let you lead a double life with incredibly complicated systems like sleepwalking, city editing, a dating system, and even controlling your in-game character’s dreams. inZOI launches on March 28, 2025 for PC.
There are a lot of souls that seem to blend in after a while, but the art direction of The First Berserker: Khazan sets it apart from its competitors. Khazan players will follow in the footsteps of the Pell Empire’s wonderful general of the same name Los. The First Berserker: Khazan will be released on March 27, 2025 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The first fighting game Fatar Fury in more than two decades will be released later this year. City of the Wolves will continue the story of Mark of the Wolves, with many backward movement mechanics and new systems such as the “Rev arts” talents that will debut in the game. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be released on April 24, 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Here are some other releases that lately do not have a precise release date, but are shown to be released in 2025.
After taking on the competitive shooter and MOBA genre with Valorant and League of Legends, Riot Games has set its sights on the fighting game community. 2XKO is a 2v2 fighting game with characters from League, so you can pit Jinx against Braun against gorgeous 2D backgrounds.
No, this is not Elden Ring 2, even though it may look like that. Ballad of Antara is an upcoming action RPG with multiple playable characters. It will also include a three-player multiplayer mode, with more content being added post-launch. Here’s the best part: it will be free to play. As far as live service games go, this one looks like a premium game.
Big Walk
You wouldn’t expect the creators of Untitled Goose Game to follow up with a cooperative game, but that’s what we get. In Big Walk, players will want to talk to each other in an open global environment. Unconventional means, since its characters cannot speak. We don’t know much else about Big Walk or how its game systems work.
After the disappointing release of the Borderlands movie, Gearbox needs to hit a home run with Borderlands 4. The upcoming shooter has been claimed to be the studio’s “biggest and most insane world” yet, with more open maps and the “most diverse” skill trees any Vault hunter has had in the franchise. The game will be set on Kairos, a new planet introduced to the franchise.
We don’t see too many triple-A games with high-fidelity visuals that feature turn-based combat. Dark Glade: Expedition 33 is turning that. The action takes place in a setting animated by the French Belle Époque, where a divine entity called the Painter determines the fate of Americans through the representation of a number in the sky, resulting in the death of all the people of that age. Just like in the Persona games, you navigate a stylized user interface while choosing attacks, but you’ll also be able to dodge and parry in real time.
The third Coffee Talk game is taking players to a new location: Tokyo. It’s still a fantasy version of the city, complete with anthropomorphic characters visiting your humble cafe for shelter and comfort. The gameplay mechanics shown in the trailer don’t look dissimilar from the previous games, but we all play Coffee Talk for its story and characters.
Crimson Desert looks a bit like any and all open-world games we’ve played. It features a giant fantasy world, thrilling action combat, RPG mechanics, and a dragon that you can ride to soar through the skies. It will be appealing to see if Pear Abyss achieves its ambitious gameplay with an equally engaging story.
We are all excited to see what Hideo Kojima prepares with Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which will take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware. The sequel will feature guest appearances from George Miller, Elle Fanning and other celebrities, while also bringing back Troy Baker’s Higgs as the antagonist.
Doom: The Dark Ages brings things back to where it all began. We will have the opportunity to explore the origins of Doomguy/Doom Slayer in a dark and fantastical reimagining of the Middle Ages. Or maybe it’s just hell. Our hero gets a new chainsaw shield that works with Captain America’s vibranium shield, and he’ll be able to ride dragons and pilot a robot.
Dune: Awakening is an upcoming MMO set in Frank Herbert’s futuristic desert planet Arrakis. The game’s story is set in an alternate timeline where players will band together to fight against a failed Kwisatz Haderach. Like any MMO, players will need to rise through the ranks of the Fremen while managing a base of operations and factions, and survive through Arrakis’ dangers to make it to the end. It will also feature PvP as well as PvE combat.
Kyle Crane is coming back, and he’s stronger than ever. Dying Light: The Beast will be a standalone adventure where players will explore Castor Woods, with new gameplay systems. Crane will now have enhanced abilities, and the game will also support 4-player co-op.
No one predicted FromSoftware would announce a multiplayer spinoff to Elden Ring at The Game Awards, but Nightreign is exactly that. The co-op action game is set in a parallel universe where players need to band together to defeat enemies from past FromSoftware games.
Microsoft tells us that Fable will smartly launch this year, even if it deserves to go until 2026. The upcoming action-adventure game evolves from the creators of Forza Horizon and will act as a reboot of the franchise. We haven’t noticed any extended gameplay segments yet and we don’t know how far its RPG formula will go.
Compulsion Games’ stylish action-adventure game surprised us all when it was announced. The game takes place in a fantasy world animated by American southern folklore. Hazel, the game’s protagonist, is able to use her magical talents to combat the monstrous “Haints” while restoring peace to the land of Prospero.
Five years after the original Ghost of Tsushima, Sony is releasing its highly-anticipated sequel. Announced at last year’s State of Play, Ghost of Yōtei will star a new female protagonist known as Atsu. Her journey will be set 300 years after Jin Sakai’s tale, in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei.
It’s a good year for Obsidian fans, as the developer is releasing two RPGs in 2025. Following Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2 will take fans back to the Halcyon system, or maybe a new galaxy. It is said to be two to three times bigger than the original, and we hope its role-playing systems are also just as expanded.
After Black Myth Wukong, the Chinese video game industry will offer a wonderful action game with Lost Soul Aside. Taking inspiration from Final Fantasy, players will fight giant monsters along with a Venom-style alien and other Devil May Cry-inspired fighting moves.
Hangar Thirteen travels back in time to 1930s Sicily in Mafia: The Old Country, following new protagonist Enzo, as seen in its trailer. The new setting will alter the same gameplay of Mafia by adding horse riding and more features. We will continue filming bad guys with a cover-based formula while exploring the origins of the crime family.
Marvel 1943 is the first major game from Uncharted alum Amy Hennig, telling an original story set during WW2. The game follows four protagonists including Captain America and Black Panther, with some shockingly awe-inspiring visuals pushing the current generation consoles hard. We’ll also get to explore iconic locations like Wakanda with a new perspective, though we’ve yet to see actual gameplay segments.
EA hasn’t officially revealed FC 26, but we all know it’s coming, as is annual access to football. The upcoming game will feature new icons, deeper football systems and FUT updates. Expect an expansion of Rush, the 5v5 game mode recently uploaded to FC 25.
There’s no doubt that GTA 6 is the biggest and most anticipated game of 2025, as long as Rockstar Games manages to release it this year. The open-world game will take place in a posh Vice City, following the two protagonists/lovers Lucia and Jason. We’re still waiting for Rockstar to reveal gameplay footage, but if it’s GTA five or Red Dead Redemption, get ready for something special.
