Sunderland College’s state-of-the-art 360-degree immersive area won the Educational Project of the Year award at the 2022 Audio Visual News Awards, which recognise excellence in audiovisual technologies around the world.
The training and learning environment, developed through Igloo Vision’s leading corporate in shared immersive areas, overcame the tough festival of Burnley College and The University Hospital in Tartu, Estonia, to be named a winner in a rite in Barcelona.
As part of the university’s redevelopment program on the Bede campus, which was made imaginable through the Ministry of Education’s T Level capital fund, the immersive area is located in a wider “innovation area” and has allowed the university to reshape its practice and provide better learning experiences, improving participation, retention and aspirations.
The fully incorporated seven-meter cylinder with a full wraparound wall and floor projection creates shared immersive virtual reality environments for academics reading a diversity of professional and T-level subjects, adding fitness and social care, construction, engineering, and virtual production, while supporting the delivery of virtually informed treatments for youth with special educational desires and disabilities.
The immersive space also provides space for larger corporate internships to better prepare students for their long-term careers by transporting them to real-world environments, such as construction sites, factories, hospitals, sports stadiums, and offshore wind farms, and strengthens local partnerships with employers. .
Ellen Thinnesen, executive director of education partnership North East, of which Sunderland College is a part, said: “Thanks to these transformative new facilities, schoolchildren, industry partners, teachers and T-level academics can digitally immerse themselves in any learning scenario, such as human body cells, all the way to NASA’s Space Centre.
“Thanks to the Ministry of Education, our technical capacity, aligned with the wishes of the industry, has particularly improved thanks to those world-class resources. Our staff and partners, the City of Sunderland, were certainly very happy to know that we had won this foreign award and were recognised for the cutting-edge pedagogical approaches we offer at the College.
John Acland-Hood, head of T-level provider preparation at the Ministry of Education, said: “T-levels are a key component of the government’s education agenda, and our investment has been instrumental in ensuring the good fortune of an offer.
“It’s seeing Sunderland College be recognised for the paintings they do with T Level students and the way they’ve used the T Level Capital Fund. “
Seeking to provide “unprecedented learning opportunities” and prepare students for the world of painting through the newest technologies and educational environments, school leaders worked intensively with Igloo Vision’s industry leaders, whose unique expertise helped the virtual transformation of consultant Bede Campus.
Theo Penty, Director of Educational Business Development at Igloo Vision, added: “Sunderland College is a leader in providing professional reporting for its students, as evidenced by the recent victory at the AV News Awards, of which we are very proud.
“We are very pleased to have run such an innovative centre that is helping to prepare T-level students for their next stages of study or employment. Through the virtual skills acquired in its immersive space, Sunderland College truly prepares its academics for the genuine global work.
Sunderland College recently welcomed Treasury Chancellor of the Exchequer, MP Helen Whately, who inspired how investment in Bede Campus is revolutionising education and vocational training in the region across T-levels.
Commenting on the visit, which included an exciting demonstration in the immersive space, the Secretary of the Treasury said, “Education and vocational education are at the heart of our plans to stand out across the country. It’s wonderful to be in Sunderland to see how our refresher programme is transforming long-term learning in the city.
“The cutting-edge technique for education at Sunderland College is truly impressive. With the help of government investment for T Levels, Bede Campus now boasts state-of-the-art amenities, giving young people the most productive position imaginable to learn, adding a simulated hospital room for healthcare students.
“By talking to the students at the school, it is transparent that they are acquiring valuable skills and delighting in what is needed in the economy and helping them develop their potential. It’s leveling in action.
