Since they were released in 2021 and 2022, respectively, Sony’s two more affordable alpha-branded Cinema Line cameras, the FX3 and FX30, have been missing an exceedingly valuable creature comfort possessed by the more premium FX6: the ability to set exposure using shutter angle. Now, Sony has announced a firmware update that will bring that feature to both cameras in September of 2024.
For the uninitiated, the ability to specify the shutter angle saves videographers from having to do a lot of fundamental (but irritating) shutter speed math to adjust the degree of motion blur that creates natural-looking images.
The charge of miscalculation (or carelessness) is ending up with unwanted dreams or hyper-realistic sequences. And it’s a mistake that becomes even more likely if you switch between other frame rates in a given shot.
With a compromised shutter angle setting, you don’t want to adjust the shutter when switching between frame rates, as the set exposure remains relative to the frame rate. That’s why we’ve liked seeing it as an option in mirrorless cameras designed for video. .
Until now, the only corporations offering shutter angles on cameras at this price point were Panasonic and Blackmagic, so it’s wonderful to see Sony join in as well. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of introducing this very useful feature to the rest of its mirrorless lineup, or at least video-focused cameras like the a7S III.
The updates will be available for free, along with some updates for the FX6, and are scheduled to land in May 2024.

I’d like to see it on the A7sIII and the A7iv. I’m sure there’s a limitation as you go back in time, but any of those cameras are built with similar firmware to the FX3.
