The Lega Serie A has transferred the North American television rights to Paramount/CBS Sports for the next two seasons, in an extension of its existing agreement.
Paramount/CBS has provided Serie A policy since taking over from ESPN in the summer of 2021, first winning a three-year contract to broadcast Italy’s most sensible flight in the United States and Canada. The initial agreement also included the live rights. to the Coppa Italy and the Italy Super Cup and was valued overall at around $195 million for the three-year cycle. This was an accumulation of the agreement with ESPN.
With nine of the 20 Serie A clubs (Milan, Inter, Parma, Fiorentina, Rome, Bologna, Atalanta, Venice and Genoa) now owned by Americans, the pressure on the league to reach a new television rights deal before 2024/25 season. It’s unclear at this time if the new two-year extension will result in Paramount/CBS Sport paying more than the previous deal, or if it’s a continuation of previous numbers.
In the United Kingdom, TNT Sport, which has covered the league since 2021, retains the rights to broadcast Serie A in England and Ireland, albeit exclusively. It’s unclear how much TNT Sport, which took over the Serie A broadcast rights after telecoms giant BT, exited the sports media industry in 2023 and paid to retain the rights at the time of writing, or how long the new deal will last.
Towards the end of last season, terrestrial channel ITV broadcast a game at the end of the week on its ITVX streaming service, and it is unclear at this time whether any sort of similar arrangement will continue in the new season.
The U. S. deal, launched through streaming service Paramount, will broadcast about 400 matches in total: 380 league matches per season, plus 25 Coppa Italia matches and all Italy Super Cup matches. Paramount/CBS has invested heavily in Italian football in recent years. Paramount sponsored Inter ahead of the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul and continued to sponsor the Nerazzurri last season, when they won their twentieth Scudetto. The deal ended in the summer, but Paramount also sponsored Atalanta in their successful Europa League final win over Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin in May. However, it is believed that it is a one-off agreement.
In addition to North America and the MENA region, Serie A sold its foreign rights to the firm Infront for the 2021-24 cycle, which then sold packages to countries and regions around the world. It remains to be noted that this agreement will continue in the next cycle.
