Most modern laptops use one of two types of RAM: LPDDR memory soldered to the motherboard or detachable DDR SODIMMs. Samsung’s new generation LPCAMM (Low Power Compression Attached Memory Module) combines the advantages of both worlds.
Like LPDDR, it is a high-speed, low-power memory solution. But like DDR, it’s removable, allowing PC brands and end users to upgrade or upgrade memory without replacing the entire motherboard.
According to Samsung, it is a formula that:
Samsung announces plans to launch its first LPCAMM modules in 2024, with speeds of up to 7500 MT/s and capacities of up to 128 GB by soldering up to four 32 GB memory packs into a single module.
While laptops are an obvious target, Samsung also notes that LPCAMM could be useful in servers, which can take advantage of compact, low-power memory solutions that need to be upgraded than LPDDR memory soldered to the motherboard.
That said, the soldered LPDDR still takes up less overall space, which may make it easier for PC manufacturers to produce thin and light laptops. And since LPCAMM is a new technology, I wouldn’t expect it to be so simple to buy a replacement. or update modules as it is to find a DDR memory key.
And even though LPCAMM uses the same generation of CAMM (compression attached memory module) that Dell introduced in 2022 and which may also become popular in the future, as AnandTech publishes, LPCAMM is not interchangeable with other CAMMs. Although we are starting to see CAMM and LPCAMM production increase in the coming years, you may want to pay close attention to what’s inside your computer to find the right type of memory for upgrades.

Well, it turns out that it is more useful to update SODIMM with LPCAMM than with CAMM, so ideally, LPCAMM would solder SODIMM and memory all the time. But since that’s what I’d like to see happen, I know the Most disappointing thing will happen instead.
