Samsung Unpacked 2020 is taking position today, but the star of the series, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, has only been teased. We won official press photos, one or two specs and a promise of more data on September 1. The good news is that today there was a complete leak of XDA’s Max Weinbach technical sheet, and it fills the maximum of spaces.
Samsung’s second generation folding is officially the “Galaxy Z Fold 2”, a lightweight replacement for the so-called “Samsung Galaxy Fold” that puts it in the same category as Samsung’s other folding, the Galaxy Z Flip. The smartphone/tablet hybrid is in the mold of last year’s Galaxy Fold 1, but iterative annual upgrades and improvements.
The most noticeable improvement is that the outside screen now occupies the front of the phone. XDA specifications list the display as a 6.2-inch, 2260-816 OLED display with a crazy 25:9 aspect ratio. This is componentlessly larger than the 4.6-inch screen delivered on the Fold 1, which seemed out of place, with a body-to-screen ratio of about 50%. The new screen is still very superior and thin, however, the “phone” component of the Fold 2 now looks more like a smartphone.
At a glance, the Fold 2 would possibly look the same as last year, but it’s a little wider. You can get an approximate concept of this from the official images, however, the XDA specifications place the Fold 2 at 159.2 – 128.2 – 6.9 mm when opened, while the original crease was 160.9 – 117.9 – 7.6 mm. This means that, when folded, the front is also slightly wider: 68 mm wide versus 62.8 mm wide in the original crease. The biggest challenge with the Fold1’s external demonstration was that it was very thin, restricting things like keyboard length and its ability to demonstrate a general home screen with 4 columns of icons. The wider frame and thinner glasses deserve to help the Fold 2 approach the screen of a general-length smartphone.
XDA lists the giant 7.6-inch indoor folding screen with a 2208-1768 solution. Now it’s a 5:4 solution instead of the 4:3 similar to the iPad. Samsung showed that the internal display was 120 Hz, which is a wonderful update, but did not mention the refresh rate of the external display. The fact sheet filtered through XDA lists the outdoor demo at 60 Hz, which would be a proposal for users. It turns out that many other people who look at a top refresh rate screen say something like “It may never return to 60 Hz,” but if those specifications are correct, the Fold 2 will ask you to do it every time. you close the phone.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Review: The Future is a mischievous disappointment Just like the Galaxy Z Flip, the Fold 2 now officially has Samsung’s “ultra-thin glass” screen cover, a glass and plastic sandwich that deserves to be a massive improvement over fog, comfortable plastic awning that was in the original crease. As we learned in the Z Flip, ultra-thin glass is not as beautiful as Gorilla Glass, because the higher layer is made of plastic resembling an adhesive screen protector. While it may not yet touch the glass, the canopy of the Samsung screen gives you a firmer surface on which to slide and better optics compared to a completely plastic lid. Note that the flexible glass is not as firm: the Z Flip still had a giant crease on the hinge, which sank when opened, creating a gap in the middle of the screen.
The other internal upgrade is the perforated camera, a wonderful update to the gigantic notch that was installed in the original Galaxy Fold. The Fold 1 notch took up the maximum of the status bar domain on the right side of the screen, making it difficult to drag the notification panel with your right hand. The hitter will leave much more of the demo in a usable state.
Another feature of the Fold 2 taken from the Z Flip is what Samsung has called a “completely redesigned” hinge, which can avoid half, in the form of an “L”. This hinge was not a smart concept in a rotating phone form because it prevented you from opening the phone, however, no one needs to open a tablet-like device, so this is more suitable here.
A Qualcomm press lists the Fold 2 with a Snapdragon 865 Plus and states that “appearing commercially for the first time, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 introduces the newest Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 cellular connectivity system.” This means that the Fold 2 will be the world’s first 6E Wi-Fi device, compatible with the new 6 GHz Wi-Fi band for added functionality in congested environments (as long as you also have a 6E Wi-Fi access point).
XDA indicates that the phone has 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, a wireless speed and a 4500 mAh battery. The cameras don’t appear to be at Note 20 Ultra level, with 12MP sensors for the main camera and ultra wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Selfie cameras on the lid and internal screens live in a drill clipping and those are 10MP sensors.
Samsung announces that it will reveal more major points on September 1, when pre-orders will also begin.
