Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra at its Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, and that means we got our first look at the cameras packed into the new phones.
And the rumours we saw ahead of launch proved to be largely accurate, with the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus necessarily boasting the same camera array as the Galaxy S23 series, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra ditching the 10x telephoto lens of its 50-inch predecessor. However, while the specs may not have replaced much, there’s a lot more on the scene with the camera’s software, namely the extensive use of synthetic intelligence to force clever editing and remastering tools. We will review them fully in due course. However, in our brief time with phones so far, they’ve proven to be pretty impressive.

While nothing has replaced camera hardware in terms of natural specs for the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus, use of the new ProVisual AI engine promises more natural images and improved low-light performance, especially when zooming. .

As such, Samsung has dubbed this system ‘Quad Optical Zoom’, with the aim of serving up sharp shots across a quartet of zoom ranges.
This 50MP sensor also has pixels 1. 6 times larger than the 10MP camera it replaces, as well as improved optical symbol stabilization, which promises to deliver images and videos with transparent zoom in low-light situations.
AI plays an important role in the Galaxy S24’s camera experience. This won’t allow for better telephoto photography on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but it will also enable a host of new smart features.
Intelligent photo editing suggestions, ranging from reflections to complete image remastering, can be provided using AI processing.
A Google Pixel 8 Magic Editor-style option called Generative Edit uses AI to dramatically manipulate an image, from cutting elements and clever procedures to fill in spaces after reorienting an image, to moving a subject to an entirely new component of the frame, simply with a few taps and highlighting; It only takes a few moments to make those adjustments. This will inevitably raise concerns about AI photo manipulation, but Samsung says metadata indicating that AI tweaks have been implemented will be embedded in photos.
Generative AI can also be used to create instant slow-motion videos by placing frames at 120fps.
And while it may not possibly be an AI-focused feature, the Galaxy S24 models come with a set of rules that allow you to capture HDR images when the camera option in third-party apps like Instagram. This means that you don’t need to take pictures on the Galaxy Camera app and then upload them via a social media app; In the latter case, everything can be done at once.
As we said earlier, we’re going to want to completely overhaul those cameras before we can give a more considered verdict on the new features. But the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s snapper set turns out to be more flexible than before, and the S24 and S24 will actually take advantage of all the new AI tools.
