Facebook and Twitter said Tuesday that they had removed social media accounts from a PeaceData news organization, which had connected to the Russian state’s propaganda efforts.
The two social media said they opened an investigation into news-related accounts after receiving recommendation from the FBI this summer.
Following investigations conducted through either platform, Facebook said it had removed thirteen accounts and two pages, while Twitter said it had banned five accounts, all of which were used to advertise press articles hosted on the PeaceData website. net.
In a report [PDF] published today that looks at PeaceData’s operations, social media research organization Graphika said the news aimed to publish press articles in English and Arabic, criticizing the US, UK and France.
PeaceData website
Graphika said the online page posted content, whether it’s fake characters and genuine hounds they had hired through classified ads posted on Guru’s task portal.
The articles criticized the right and left wings of the political spectrum, such as the U.S. military and foreign policies.
“They have published and shared articles on racial protests in the United States, accusations of foreign interference and war crimes committed across the United States, corruption and suffering through capitalism,” Graphika wrote in her report.
These articles are still online on the PeaceData website today. Many have distorted perspectives and conspiracy theories in the ward, with titles such as “Excessive funding from the US military).Hus It is provoking climate change and white supremacist culture of war crimes,” “Svetlana Tikhanovskaya’s deleted Internet pages show that she is little more than a puppet in the western regime’s replacement,” Portland’s manifestation: The authoritarian Trump is worse than the demagogue”and “The Era of American Domination”
Graphika said the network was still in its infancy when it was dismantled, suggesting that the FBI had caught on to the operation before it could cause genuine damage on social media.
In a series of tweets today, Twitter showed the assessment, saying that the banned PeaceData accounts “had had little effect on Twitter and were quickly known and deleted.”
Twitter has avoided naming the genuine entity behind the PaceData online page and just said it can be “a reliable feature of Russian state actors.”
On the other hand, Facebook was more braised in a blog post today, stating that PeaceData’s online page connected to “people related to activities beyond the Russian Internet Research Agency (IRA)”, the notorious Russian company founded in St. Petersburg that is known for participating in online influence operations on behalf of the Russian Array government and best known for its interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
Graphika supported Facebook’s evaluation, linking PeaceData to the Russian IRA.
