Electric truck maker Rivian will launch into the popular pickup and SUV segment that lately is governed by gasoline-powered cars from Ford Motor Co, General Motors and Ram. Rivian also markets its electric trucks to adventurers who like to take their cars off the road.
To satisfy the desires of those adventurous customers, Rivian plans to install EV chargers in popular outdoor destinations in the U. S. In the U. S. , such as state parks and trails, where there is no EV charging infrastructure. Some of those new EV chargers will be installed in the state of Michigan as a component of a new collaboration, right in the garden of Rivian’s closest competitors.
Today, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined through Rivian, state and local officials, and representatives from Adopt a Charger Near the Beaches of Lake Michigan in Holland State Park to celebrate the first opening of approximately 15 of the electric vehicle charging sites to be installed in State Parks and a state hatchery in Michigan over the next few years.
An estimated total of 30 Rivian Waypoint chargers are expected to be installed as part of the first phase of the project, with long-term installations starting in the summer and continuing through the end of the year.
“This partnership to install charging stations in our state parks is a testament to the collaborative technique we are adopting to grow our economy and combat climate replenishment head-on with clean, reliable energy,” said Governor Whitmer. “These charging stations along the Lake Michigan Electric Circuit build on our rich culture of exploring Pure Michigan and bringing together communities and businesses to ensure we honor our beyond as the position that puts the world on wheels and continue to invest in our while driving the transition to electric vehicles. “
The first two Rivian Waypoints loaders were unveiled at Ottawa County’s 142-acre state park west of Grand Rapids, followed by an inaugural cargo demonstration with a Rivian R1T pickup truck.

As part of an operating agreement between Rivian, Adopt a Charger and Michigan Decomponentment of Natural Resources, interested parties will supply Rivian Waypoints Tier 2 open network chargers at no charge to the state or taxpayers. Rivian Waypoint chargers are supplied with a J1772 plug, suitable for all electric vehicles, adding Rivian’s R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV.
Adopt a Charger is a non-profit organization and will provide technical assistance, marketing and sponsorship for the operation of the chargers for the duration of the agreement.
“The purpose of Adopting a Charger is to enable zero-emission tourism in Michigan and motivate visitors of all ages to consider the effect of their decisions on the environment,” said Kitty Adams Hoksbergen, executive director of Adopt a Charger.
ITC, an electric power transmission company, will finance the use of electric power for two years. Michigan’s application provider, Consumers Energy, offers the budget to pay for electric power and infrastructure improvements in state parks to install the charger.
The deployment of electric vehicle chargers in the state is done in phases. State parks on Northern Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are expected to be part of the current phase, which is expected to take position next year.
The long-lasting Rivian loaders will be installed in Warren Dunes State Park, in the southwest corner of the Lower Michigan Peninsula, north along the popular “Gold Coast” address of Lake Michigan and other inland locations in the state.

The two corporations are partnering to put control in the middle of Rivian’s off-road experience. Corporations are running collaboratively to demonstrate how “responsibly off-road” in an electric vehicle.
As part of the collaboration with Tread Lightly!, Rivian is assembling a team of Master Tread Trainers who lead the company’s efforts to teach its consumers, networks and workers in the field. This includes recommendations for Rivian consumers on how to drive responsibly on the trails. and other outdoor spaces, respecting the rights of personal owners, staying on designated routes and avoiding delicate spaces such as meadows, lake shores, wetlands and streams.
“Inspiring other people to be adventurous while modeling movements that respect the environments those cars pass through is critical, as we all work together to make sure public lands are available now and for generations to come,” said Matt Caldwell, director of Tread. Electric vehicle charging services in Michigan will also help publicize tourism in the state, which has been affected by the pandemic of the past two years. Increasing EV charging sites is one way to attract tourists to Michigan, which has been a popular summer and fall destination for years.
