Residents of Taguig village oppose Dito’s mobile sites

MANILA, Philippines – Residents of a subdivision of the city of Taguig, many of whom are retired or active army generals, oppose the plan of Dito Telecommunity Corp., the country’s third largest telecommunications operator, to build 5G mobile towers in the village.

Bangsil said Dito sought to build two 5G mobile sites on Duke and Baptist streets within the village, plus another 18 around the city of Taguig.

She said representatives of Huawei, one of China’s largest telecommunications equipment suppliers, toured the village in March to convince citizens to settle for the project.”Who gives you the strength to do that?” She asked.

Dito responded to the Inquirer’s request for comment.

Residents went further and expressed their disapproval of the plan in a petition.

“We, the owners and members of AFPOVAI, Phase 2, City of Taguig, would like to publicize our opposition to the assignment to build a Dito Telecom (Huawei) cell phone within our village,” they said in the petition.

In addition to long-term fitness risks, many countries such as the United States, Germany, Australia and Japan have posed cybersecurity issues on Huawei’s 5G network, Dito Telecom’s main sponsor, they added.

“We need to take into account the fact that 40 other people lately hold key positions in government and the fact that our village is a network of former army officers. In addition, AFPOVAI is close to army headquarters, army and air force on the outskirts,” they said.

“In fact, most of the owners here oppose the creation of a Dito tower in the community or the Huawei tower, so we had an audience,” said the general who asked the anonymous. The August 22 assembly took a position among Huawei representatives and owners.

The general also expressed fear about the cybersecurity hazards posed by the structure of Huawei towers inside his village, near army camps.
