A report from tech news site The Information suggests that Apple is shifting its priorities toward augmented reality. Reportedly, the next edition of Vision Pro has been canceled as it continues to work on a more affordable edition with a reduced feature set.
Citing a worker at Apple’s headphone home chain and others who are engaged in the production of headphones for Apple, the report states that the less expensive Vision product, perhaps around $1,600, is expected before the end of 2025. Apple had originally planned to introduce these headphones alongside the Vision Pro, similar to the styles available in each edition of the iPhone. The more affordable style would likely have fewer cameras, smaller speakers, and weigh less, Apple has struggled to reduce the load on the unit’s displays.
Apple’s augmented truth efforts are being heavily followed by others in the headphone industry, so even a momentary and situational setback from high-end headphones can have significant repercussions. The News cites current and former Meta artists to describe how the company had abandoned its plans for its own high-end headsets in January 2023, but then began working on a new high-end style five months after Apple’s Vision Pro disappeared.
