VGChartz Methodology: Material estimates are based on a retail sample and trends in each country, which are then extrapolated to constitute the broader region. This allows us to produce numbers that are within 10% of the actual totals.
This knowledge is compared to the official shipping figures published through console brands and with the figures estimated through regional trackers with a higher market policy than ours. We then updated our own estimates to align with those figures. This could result in regular changes, sometimes in a short period of time, but we believe it is vital to prioritise accuracy over consistency.
Please note that our estimates are based on knowledge of sales (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases, the figures released through console brands are based on sales knowledge, where as soon as a device leaves the factory and enters the chain of origin for delivery, it is considered a sale. For this reason, there is a difference between corporate figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after adjustments. The only exception to this is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining inventory is eventually depleted; At this point, the numbers will match.
