ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Police Department is now accepting programs for the 24th Citizen Police Academy (CPA). The CPA is an educational program designed to create greater communication between the police and the network they serve.

The CPA’s intention is to teach participants about the functioning of the Arlington County Police Department and its role in the community. Participants have the opportunity to better perceive how police officers are trained and to be informed about a police officer’s painting environment. Some of the topics covered in the CPA program include: hiring police officers, legal considerations, use of force, intellectual aptitude and crisis response, destitution, corporate conscience, criminal investigations, K9, tactical operations and patrol operations. The CPA will be an interactive informational delight based on discussions with roundtables, as well as practical painting and training sessions.

Program information

The CPA is a 10-week program that begins on Thursday, September 17, 2020. Courses are presented through police officers, civilians and volunteers and participants will have the opportunity to express their considerations and questions about how the service works.

Classes will be held on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at an Arlington County facility large enough to allow for social distancing and maintain compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols. All attendees must wear a face covering during the sessions. One session will take place on a Saturday at an off-site location, outside of Arlington County. To receive a graduation certificate, participants must attend at least 8 out of 10 sessions.

Candidates

Interested applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have not been convicted of a crime, and must live, work, attend school, or otherwise be affiliated with or engaged with community organizations in Arlington. Due to the nature of the curtains covered in the CPA, a background check will be carried out for both candidates. Class sizes are limited and both will strive to maintain a balanced workforce that reflects the diversity of the Arlington community. Online programs must be submitted until 5pm. Thursday, August 13, 2020.

Contact information

For more information about CPA, contact the Department’s Training and Professional Development Unit at 703-228-4247 or [email protected].
