Photo gallery: old FDNY photos in action

Paul Thayer was a Pulitzer Prize-winning fireplace enthusiast and photographer who captured stunning photographs of FDNY chimney fighters running in the Harlem community in upper Manhattan, what we now call “the War Years” in New York.

Along the way, he befriended firefighter Mike Higham, who acquired ownership of the images when Thayer’s wife gave them to him when Thayer died.

Higham recently contacted Firehouse and kindly appeared to use those images on our online page as a testament to Thayer’s paintings and attention to detail, as well as the determination of the many firefighters depicted in the images.

We hope you enjoy this tough adventure in the past, and you can also see those photographs and be more informed about Paul Thayer in fdnyheroes.com.
