Philippine leader threatens to close or take over ‘shabthrough’ telecommunications through government

MANILA — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday threatened the closure or government expropriation of telecoms firms for what he called “lousy” services, and gave providers until December to improve.

“Make it better so that we are not forced to take drastic action,” he said in his state of the country speech. “I could well close them all.”

The country has recently had two major telecommunications companies, PLDT and Globe Telecom, and Duterte had already threatened to close its 2016 election campaign.

These corporations have continually defended their investments and innovations and have stated that the top government bureaucracy has prevented faster network updates. (Report through Neil Jerome Morales; Written through Martin Petty Edited through Ed Davies)
