OBSERVING The last frame discovered in Mthwalume is connected to serial murders

Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, police commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, said there is no indication that the sixth painting discovered in Mthwalume on Saturday is connected to five other bodies discovered in it since April.

Jula speaking at the site where the bodies of Zama Chiliza and an unidentified woman were discovered in August.

Jula, along with KZN Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala, social MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza and MEC Bheki Ntuli, visited the region to deposit wreaths on Tuesday.

“At this time, there is no indication that the newly discovered frame may be connected to the bodies that were dumped in connection with the serial murders,” Jula said.

The body, believed to be a woman, was discovered burned on the roadside on Saturday morning through other people heading to work.

The painting was discovered near where Nelisiwe Dube’s painting was discovered in July, and was discovered a few weeks after Mduduzi Khomo, who allegedly confessed to the murders, committed suicide while in police custody.

Prime Minister Zikalala said the factor will have to go beyond police investigations.

“The case does not end there, as long as the police continue to investigate, we will have to deal with the social problems that are at the root of this situation. We need to work with communities to regain the spirit of ubuntu,” Zikalala said.

Zikalala also visited some of the homes of those affected whose families expressed sadness because Khomo’s death meant they would not get answers about what happened to their loved ones.

“The police were negligent because if you are arrested, you will have to be monitored if you have been arrested and charged with a crime,” said Jeffrey Phehlukwayo, whose daughter Akhona and her friend Nosipho were discovered in April.

Meanwhile, Jula said police will continue to seek control of other bodies imaginable.
