Washington – NIOSH recently identified seven people, one team, nine publications and 3 projects/tools as recipients of the 2020 Science and Service Awards for their contributions to occupational health and protection.
Chris Coffey, a breathing hedge investigator, won the James P. Keogh Award, which recognizes an existing or former company worker whose career “shows respect and compassion for individual workers, with tireless leadership, courage and a ferocious determination to put his wisdom into practice. to your well-being.
During Coffey’s four-decade career, his laboratory and office studies on respirator functionality have reduced exposure to inhalation risks, focusing on transparent masks. His studies “improved the state of employee coverage and contributed to the status quo of a classification formula for particulate respirators that was established through NIOSH in 1995 and incorporated into federal regulations. Coffey completed his career this year as Associate Director of Science at NIOSH’s National Individual Protection Technology Laboratory: a position he has held since 2011.
The Director of Extraordinary Sciences’ Intramural Award, which recognizes notable contributions to clinical excellence through scientists and intramural staff, was presented to qualified epidemiologist and fitness physicist Robert Doug Daniels (Lew Wade Distinguished Career Scientist Award), business studio hygienist Brie Hawley Blackley (Early Career Scientific Award) and biologist Jeffrey Powell (Scientific Support Award).

The Bullard-Sherwood Research-to-Practice Award, which recognizes notable contributions to knowledge, intervention and generation, is awarded to two assignments. The Alice Hamilton Awards for Scientific Excellence in Technical and Educational Materials through NIOSH Scientists and Engineers in 2019 covered topics such as traffic-related collisions between law enforcement, industry hearing fitness, a new electronic tool for comparing chemicals in the workplace, vibration transmission measurement strategies and miners’ protection from dust , birth defects and lung diseases.
