New Samsung leak significantly improves Galaxy S24 Ultra photo quality

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra owners will greatly improve the quality of photographs on social media platforms, according to a new report.

Updated on December 16 below: Article published on December 14.

According to well-known leaker Ahmed Qwaider, Samsung has formed a “new partnership” with Meta to allow the 2024 flagship smartphone to upload and display HDR images on Facebook and Instagram. This partnership will finally allow Android users to download and watch HDR. content, a feature that is only available on iPhones lately.

Previous leaks have revealed that next year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra will support Android 14’s new Ultra HDR photo standard. However, social media platforms don’t currently support the new format. This results in the loss of any HDR information stored in the pictures and reduces their quality when viewed on HDR-capable displays, including those found in modern smartphone flagships.

HDR display differs from what has become known as “HDR photography” in that it enables the photo to display in the smartphone’s full range of brightness and colors. On the other hand, standard jpeg files are restricted to a far narrow range of brightness levels. HDR display can deliver far greater realism, especially in photos with bright highlights.

While support for Ultra HDR is good news for Samsung fans, there shouldn’t be any form of particular “partnership” required between smartphone vendors and online platforms to support Ultra HDR content.

Ultra HDR is an open specification that no one can implement, so all that’s needed to enable the feature is for Meta and Samsung to do it, which they can seamlessly do independently.

If Instagram, for example, allows Ultra HDR support, then any device will be able to download an Ultra HDR symbol and demonstrate it nicely in HDR-enabled demos. There is no technical explanation as to why this feature is limited to Samsung products.

I recently asked a Google representative if the company works with social media installations (like Instagram) on Ultra HDR and they told me:

“Yes, Android is running with our developer network on Ultra HDR. We can’t discount percentages of our partners’ terms.

This reaction strongly suggests that it may not just be Samsung’s new flagship that will have access to this major quality improvement next year.

Update: December 16.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra could gain a significant improvement over the Galaxy S23 Ultra when it comes to displaying HDR content, including Ultra HDR photos.

According to recent insider information, also leaked via Ahmed Qwaider, next year’s Galaxy flagship will feature a significantly brighter display, reaching a peak brightness of 2600 nits thanks to its Dynamic AMOLED display. This build represents a huge improvement over the Galaxy S23 Ultra. , which tops out at 1,050 nits, according to Dxomark.

Increasing the brightness to 2600 nits will particularly increase the dynamic diversity of the display, the visual quality of all HDR content, and bring it forward to the Pixel 8 Pro with its 2400-nit display.

However, the actual brightness achieved when watching HDR content is particularly lower than the maximum screen brightness, so we may not know exactly how the Galaxy S24 Ultra will perform until its launch early next year.
