Elon Musk is not easy for Tesla employees to return to work in the industry or leave the company.
The policy, leaked in leaked emails Musk sent Tuesday to Tesla executives, was first reported through electric vehicle news site Electrek.
“Anyone who needs to paint remotely will have to be on the job site for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours a week or leave Tesla. That’s less than we ask of factory staff,” Musk wrote, adding that the workplace should be the employee’s number one workplace where the other employees they interact with meet, “not a remote branch unrelated to painting tasks. “
Musk said he would personally review any request for exemption from the policy, but for the most part, “if he doesn’t come forward, we’ll assume he’s resigned. “
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on the policy change, but Musk gave the impression of verifying it in a tweet from himself early Wednesday when asked on Twitter: “Hey, Elon. . . Is it an outdated concept?” Musk replied, “They intend to paint somewhere else. “

The policy is absolutely at odds with that of the other tech company Musk is looking to buy, Twitter, which in the past announced that painters can continue to work from home “forever” if they prefer. Artistic is where you work and that includes leaving home full-time for good,” CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a note to Twitter’s nearly 100,000 painters in March, just before Musk’s interest in owning the social media platform was revealed.
At Tesla, however, this won’t be the case. It’s especially important for top executives to show up in the office, Musk said, adding that this is one of the reasons he necessarily lived at Tesla’s fremont, California, plant when the company was struggling to ramp up production in 2017 and 2018.
“If I hadn’t done that, Tesla would have gone bankrupt a long time ago,” he wrote. “Some corporations don’t want it, of course, but when was the last time they shipped a wonderful new product?time. “

He added, “Tesla has created and will manufacture and will manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth,” he added. “Possibly it wouldn’t happen by calling him on the phone. “
Surveys show that most staff prefer the option of working from home. Since reopening after covid-19 shutdowns, many businesses beyond Twitter have announced greater flexibility for staff who need to work remotely, in part as a way to retain or attract. Skill in an especially tight task market. But the richest user in the world doesn’t seem to be involved in this dynamic.
