The Vigoride multipurpose aircraft, designed for a variety of transportation facilities and infrastructure in the area, will conduct a number of operations in the area to verify and demonstrate the performance of the vehicle and its subsystems. Under license from the Federal Communications Committee company, the project is expected to last up to 180 days. The project will also come with the deployment of several consumer satellites and the verification of devices for some other consumer.
“Today’s launch was the culmination of months of work to conduct an extensive floor verification campaign, prepare the spacecraft and download mandatory government licenses and approvals for our first flight of the Vigoride vehicle,” said John Rood, CEO of Momentus. We are extremely pleased to see our vision of offering shipping and area infrastructure and being one of the first suppliers of those who are key to the new and developing area economy begin to become a reality. “
A key component of the Vigoride vehicle is the electrothermal microwave thruster (MET) that uses water as a propellant. The MET produces thrust by ejecting incredibly hot gases through a rocket nozzle. However, unlike a traditional chemical rocket engine, which generates heat through a chemical reaction, the MET heats the propellant using solar microwave energy. The use of the MET provides cost-effective, efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion to meet the demands of transport facilities and infrastructure in space.
“The MET generation has been researched in academia since the 1980s, but we are pioneers in bringing it to market,” Rood said. “Testing the MET on this first Vigoride flight is one of the vital responsibilities we plan to carry out as we continue to refine and realize. “
On this first flight, Momentus welcomes FOSSA Systems and Orbit NTNU among its customers. FOSSA deploys picosatellites as a component of a constellation to provide real-time global Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity for commercial applications. Orbit NTNU will use its payload, SelfieSat, to take a selfie from a satellite in the area (the payload has an external display, which displays photographs sent by the public while an arm-mounted camera photographs the screen with Earth in the background).
In addition to Vigoride, Momentus used a moment port on the Falcon nine to fly a spouse’s third-party deployer. Momentus used this deployer to put its first Bronco Space consumer satellite into orbit at California Polytechnic State University in Pomona. Four other satellites were also put into orbit payloads that are consumers of the spouse of the implementer’s formula.
“Our adventure in the area was only made imaginable thanks to the dedication, concentration and superskillness of our team,” Rood said. “I am proud of the way Momentus workers have responded to the many demanding situations we have faced. It would have been simple to believe that our demanding initial situations were insurmountable, but the fact that Momentus does not give up is testament to an emerging culture that will be the true foundation of our good fortune over time. “
Rood concluded by saying, “We look to the future to help our consumers achieve their project goals, driving our Vigoride forward through a local testing campaign and applying everything we know to continue our service offerings as we try to activate the new local economy to thrive. “
