Microsoft is back in the smartphone game with the highly anticipated Surface Duo, a $1400 folding smartphone with Android and productive.
Surface Duo will be available for pre-order from August 12. It will be fully published and will be available for purchase from September 10.
Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Fold phones that come with a single screen that folds in the center, Surface Duo looks more like an e-book with two screens on each side. The concept is to have a single application running on any of the screens, or that multiple programs run on any of the screens to perform multiple tasks or simulate a PC configuration with two monitors. Each screen measures 5.6 inches. The screen extends and measures 8.1 inches.
The Surface Duo hinge is capable of turning 360 degrees, which means you can fold one screen over the other, like a notebook, allowing you to use a single screen as you would a classic smartphone. The flexible hinge also allows you to hold the Duo as a genuine e-book when reading about eBook apps, as well as folding it into a tent to watch videos.
As expected, Microsoft preinstalls a variety of Microsoft applications, such as Office, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Edge, OneNote, To Do, News, Authenticator, Bing Search and most importantly (with the slightest trace of sarcasm) Microsoft Solitaire Collection.
As for the specifications, Surface Duo is rarely the most wonderful phone for its value: you’re definitely paying for the foldable double screen form here. It runs on the 2019 Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship chip and has no 5G connectivity. While you may say that 5G is not unusual at the moment, the lack of specific 5G will cause anger, as the Duo is meant to be a productivity device.
