Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT) will invest $2. 9 billion in Japanese knowledge centers after Tokyo asked for more domestic synthetic intelligence computing power.
According to Nikkei, based on the plan, a complex new generation of AI semiconductors will be installed at two existing sites in western and eastern Japan.
A program to train some 3 million people in AI will also be launched, as well as a new AI robotics study and progression lab set up in Tokyo.
“The competitiveness of the sector of the Japanese economy (. . . ) it will depend on the adoption of AI,” Microsoft President Brad Smith told the Nikkei on Monday.
“[AI is key to] sustaining productivity growth, even when a country has a declining population. “
Microsoft is expected to officially unveil its plans on Tuesday during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s stopover in Washington.
This would also involve a partnership with the Japanese government for cybersecurity.
“The cybersecurity risk landscape is more challenging,” Smith added, “we’re seeing it in China and Russia in particular, but we’re also seeing an expansion of ransomware activity around the world. “
