Microsoft to developers: Say goodbye to the Visual Studio Codespaces cloud-based progression environment

Microsoft has to terminate the Visual Studio code spaces, the famous Visual Studio Online edition, and merge it with the GitHub edition of the same product.

Visual Studio Codespaces (formerly Visual Studio Online) is a cloud-based progression environment designed to make developers more productive by creating a progression environment configured in minutes.

The announcement that Visual Studio code spaces will be “consolidated” in GitHub code spaces is a marvel given the duplication between the two.

Microsoft announced the famous product in May 2020 along with the new GitHub code spaces, which are themselves an edition of VS Codespaces. Both products are online partners of Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code (VS Code).

According to Microsoft, the resolution to move code spaces from Visual Studio to GitHub was intended to reduce confusion between the two almost same products.

“After the launch of local GitHub delight, we began to hear that the two separate delights confused our users,” says Allison Buchholtz-Au, Program Manager at Visual Studio Online.

“We believe that by combining existing Codespaces into one, we can eliminate confusion, simplify fun for everyone, and act faster to respond to visitor feedback.”

This substitution means that visual studio code space users will need to transfer to GitHub code spaces until February 2021, when the Visual Studio code space offering in Azure will end.

What’s still transparent is the value of GitHub code spaces, which are lately in personal beta.In May, along with the Visual Studio Online replacement call, Microsoft reduced the value of VS code spaces in the Microsoft Azure cloud.

Microsoft has reduced sample costs for Visual Studio code spaces in Azure through more than part of its previous costs. For example, the base point with two cores and 4 GB of RAM was reduced to 0.08 consistent with the hour, while the popular one is offered with 4 cores and 8 GB of RAM in a Linux example were reduced from approximately 0.45 per hour to 0.17 per hour. The premium point with 8 cores and 16 GB of RAM was reduced from 0.87 to 0.34.

The price of GitHub code spaces has been finalized and Azure is not mentioned on your website.

Microsoft’s Buchholtz-Au notes that, as of September 4, existing Visual Studio Codespaces users can begin the transition to the personal beta version of gutHub.On November 20, Microsoft will prevent users from creating new Visual Studio plans and code spaces, existing ones will continue to work At this point, new users will only be able to sign up for code spaces on GitHub.

The final deadline is February 17, 2021, when Microsoft will close the Visual Studio code space portal and “delete all remaining code plans and spaces in the service”.

Regarding the price of GitHub code spaces, Microsoft explains in a FAQ document that it will provide the main points by the end of this year when GitHub code spaces are generally available.

“GitHub code spaces are loose as long as they are in a limited public beta. The final value of GitHub code spaces will be announced when code spaces have reached general availability, which is expected by the end of this year,” Microsoft said.

“There is no way to move Visual Studio code spaces to GitHub code spaces. You’ll want to re-create your code spaces once you have the beta version of gitHub code spaces,” Microsoft notes.

The accommodation features have not yet been decided for developers who have used Visual Studio code spaces with GitHub rivals such as GitLab and BitBucket.

“While GitHub Codespaces offers an optimized author experience for GitHub repositories, lately we’re repeating the experience of repositories hosted elsewhere and will keep it updated as plans are formalized,” says Microsoft.
