Microsoft has shown that hackers favored a severe disruption of Office suite systems this month.
Outlook email, OneDrive and the cloud computing platform have been hit by sporadic outages, for which a shadow hacktivist has claimed responsibility.
Microsoft was initially reluctant to verify the attack, but the company now claims that an organization called Anonymous Sudan is the disruption.
The duty claimed on his social media channel Telegram at the time.
Some security researchers are Russian.
In a blog post, Microsoft said the attacks were “temporarily affecting the availability” of certain services.
He said the attackers were targeting “disruption and publicity” and likely used rented cloud infrastructure and virtual personal networks to bombard Microsoft’s servers from so-called zombie computer botnets around the world.
Microsoft said there is no evidence that visitors’ knowledge has been accessed or compromised.
Cybersecurity researcher Jake Williams said the extent of the damage is unknown.
“We really have no way of measuring if Microsoft doesn’t provide that information,” he said.
He said Microsoft’s apparent reluctance to provide an objective measure of the impact of traffic “probably speaks to the magnitude. “
The Microsoft incident highlights how distributed denial-of-service attacks remain “a significant threat that we all agree to talk about,” said Edward Amoroso, a professor at New York University.
“It’s arguable to call it an unsolved problem. “
Severe effects of Microsoft 365 suite outages were reported on June 5, with a peak of 18,000 reports of crashes and challenges.
On Twitter that day, Microsoft said Outlook, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business were affected.
The attacks continued into the week and Microsoft confirmed on June 9 that its Azure cloud platform had been affected.
On June 8, computer security news site BleepingComputer. com reported that cloud-based OneDrive log hosting was down globally for some time.
Microsoft said at the time that OneDrive desktop clients were affected, BleepingComputer reported.
