LONDON (AP) — British antitrust regulators on Friday extended their deadline to issue a final order blocking Microsoft’s $69 billion plan to buy video game maker Activision Blizzard, allowing them to review the “detailed and complex filing” of the U. S. tech giant defending its case. .
The Competition and Markets Authority had rejected the deal, the largest in the history of the generation, for fear it would stifle the festival of game titles such as Call of Duty in the developing cloud gaming market.
But the British watchdog appears to have softened its stance after passing judgment on frustrated efforts by U. S. regulators to block the deal.
The authority says it has extended its initial six-week deadline to Aug. 29 to be able to review Microsoft’s response, which primarily notes “material adjustments in special cases and reasons” why regulators are expected to consider an order rejecting the settlement.
The watchdog’s resolution may just be a smart signal for Microsoft and Activision in their war to close the deal signaled about 18 months ago.
Microsoft had appealed the U. K. ‘s rejection to a court that was due to hear the case on July 28. But both sides said this week they had jointly asked to suspend that hearing while Microsoft works to revise the deal to appease regulators.
The announcement came just after the U. S. Federal Trade Commission had issued a response to the U. S. Federal Trade Commission. The U. S. government lost its legal power to prevent the deal, which gave Microsoft a major victory. The FTC appealed.
