Microsoft Introduces Unified OneNote with a Redesigned Look and Feel for Windows 11

Microsoft’s project is to unify the OneNote experience on Windows. Right now, there are two OneNote apps on Windows. Microsoft plans to combine the feature sets of those apps to create a unified OneNote with either world. A recent article from the company’s technical network (opens in a new tab) described the tweaks that have been implemented, as well as features in progress.

The app called simply “OneNote” is the one that will get new features, adding features imported from the other OneNote app. “OneNote for Windows 10” continues to work, but the long term of the platform lies in Windows.

The updated edition of OneNote helps users capture, organize and share content better, according to Microsoft.

The updated OneNote has a new navigation pane and a full-screen mode. The page list, segment tabs, and pocket book drop-down menu all have a new look and feel to align with Windows 11. The application uses the Mica effect, which is a type of blur used by Microsoft’s operating system.

To the delight of corner lovers, the updated OneNote has rounded the corners of the app. Microsoft said it was “obsessed with each and every rounded corner and each and every animation” when redesigning the app.

The app’s updated drawing tab now works in the same way as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The new OneNote’s Ink to shape, a ruler and Ink to Text. Touch lets OneNote provide feedback when typing on Surface Slim Pen 2 in Surface Laptop Studio or Surface Pro 8.

OneNote also has an optional simplified tape that takes up less area than tape.

Please note that some of the features are available now, while others are on the way.

Here are the features that are already available to OneNote users on the existing channel:

The ability to insert images from a camera and the updated sharing experience are now available to experts. Microsoft is also planning more writing features, adding pen, ink correction, and a new ink concentrate view.

A transcription and ink tool is also on the way. The feature allows you to annotate, write notes, and highlight while the app transcribes someone’s speech. OneNote will also have new dictation features in the future.

The latest edition of OneNote (the one with new features) comes pre-installed in Office on Windows 11. It can also be downloaded as a standalone app from the Microsoft website.

microsoft a note

A bit confusing, there are two editions of OneNote for Windows. This is the edition that will get new features and visual updates in the future.
