As the year 2025 progresses, Microsoft is intensifying its crusade aimed at the 800 million users who have not yet upgraded to Windows 11, before it retires in October. “What does this mean?” the company warned Tuesday. With security threats increasing, it is imperative to update immediately. That’s not all, Microsoft has also released some strangely bad news for all the users who want to act now.
“Microsoft 365 apps will no longer be supported after October 14, 2025 on Windows 10 devices,” the company confirmed. “To use Microsoft 365 apps on your device, you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 11. “
So, will that be the kicker for the millions stubbornly sticking with Windows 10? And how many of those will plump for the $30, 12-month extended Windows 10 support option? What will that mean for 365, and what about enterprises who have the option to extend Windows 10 for more than just a year — at a steep cost?
Microsoft’s latest document adds some useful details. “Microsoft 365 apps will no longer edit in Windows 10 after the end of Array,” as well as “Microsoft 365 apps will no longer edit in Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8. 1 now that operating systems have reached the end of Array dates. It will be the same for Windows 10 starting in October.
Microsoft softens this point a little later in its document: “If you are running Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 device, apps will continue to work as before. However, we strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 to avoid functionality and reliability issues. with the time.
The most critical factor remains the lack of Windows 10 security updates, with no paid extended option. And the complexity here remains the number of Windows 10 PCs that don’t meet the hardware needs to upgrade. “Let’s face the elephant in the room,” says Microsoft, “you’ll want to verify that your PC meets the minimum formula requirements for the update. ” For those users, the only option is a new PC; However, Microsoft has kindly designated 2025 as the year to upgrade the PC to Windows 11. It remains to be seen what difference that will make.
Windows 10 is two-months into a remarkable reversal against Windows 11, with its market share actually growing back rather than reducing. When the January numbers are available we’ll know if that trend has continued. Meantime, you can expect more “upgrade immediately” messaging to come out.
This new warning came on the same day as Microsoft’s biggest Patch Tuesday in years, with several zero days. If that’s not enough to focus minds on upgrading before security runs out, I’m not sure what would.
