Like probably most people, I stopped keeping up with new Game Boy Color releases at least 20 years ago, but my love for this iconic family of Nintendo handheld devices has never wavered. The recent resurgence of old games (thanks in part to dream emulation machines like Steam Deck and dedicated devices like Analogue Pocket and ModRetro Chromatic) has encouraged me to revisit some of the classics in the Game Boy family, but I I did. Don’t wait for it. only to come across a logo for a new game to play.
This game is delightfully Metal Miracle, a side-scrolling racer and gun platformer in the vein of Contra or Broforce. The game follows two playable characters, Fox and Ace, as they battle an army of machines that have enslaved humanity and eliminated music. .
Fox is a “ninja guitarist” who fires what looks like a Gibson Flying V guitar gun, while Ace is a “mutant punk” who throws his vocal microphone at enemies. The game is complemented to an impressive and lively point by Chiptune soundtrack and delicious pixel art graphics.
By the way, Fox’s animation is fantastic:
To be clear, we’re not talking about an officially licensed Nintendo Game Boy Color game. The last one to be released in the United States Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: The Philosopher’s Stone in 2002. But Pat Morita’s development team – made up of Enrique Ramírez, Carlos Pérez and Antonio Pérez – plans to release Metal Miracle in a classic game. Small cartridge.
Right now, the team is prepping a Kickstarter campaign to fund the physical release. You can sign up to be notified when it goes live.
The great news is that even if the Kickstarter doesn’t get funded, the developers plan to finish the game and release it as a digital ROM.
Speaking of digital, you can download a demonstration of Miracle Metal right now on Itch. io. It has 4 full levels. You will want something like Retroarch or a committed emulator as a mgba to take advantage of it.
In preparing for this news, I was pleased to note that Pat Morita’s team is not remotely the only independent developer that has kept the live game alive and supplied with new adventures.
Sites like Homebrew Hub gather and archive a large gathering of Homebrew and Demoscene software for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and NES. HomeBrew Hub currently offers over 1,300 titles, which everyone can read in their browser or take credit for a device of their selection via ROM download.
Then there’s Incube8 Games, a publisher that specializes in physical releases of new indie titles for the Game Boy family, many of which come with impressive full-color manuals and extras like sticker packs.
I also met Spacebot Interactive, an independent developer who created new games of the logo, such as the fantasy RPG Dragonyhm, for Palmer Luckey’s Chromatic Modreto.
These examples are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. It is quite incredible to realize that if you still have a game or a device compatible with Boy in 2025, a global of new releases to discover. Talk about an exciting Rabbit Hollow to move slowly.
