According to the New York Post, Rapinoe tried to play defense when she was injured.

An emotional Rapinoe was attended to by medical staff before leaving the game, ending her evening and career.

Before leaving the field, Rapinoe hugged former USWNT teammate Ali Krieger, who plays for Gotham FC and is also playing his final professional match.

Rapinoe announced she would end after this season in July.

“I’ve had an amazing career and this game has taken me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people,” Rapinoe said at the time.

“I’m incredibly grateful to have played for so long, to have had as much past luck as ours and to have been part of a generation of players who have certainly left the game better than they found it. To be to play one last World Cup and one last season in the NWSL and to go through on my own terms is incredibly special. “
