Meet ‘Jennie’, robot puppy made to comfort dementia patients

Tombot Inc. , a U. S. -based robot company. The U. S. Department of Homeland Security recently introduced “Jennie,” a genuine robot puppy designed to provide thrills to others with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other intellectual fitness issues. According to Tombot, the robot animal is intended to be a low-maintenance option for other people who might have a hard time caring for a genuine animal.

According to the company’s official website, ‘Jennie’, modelled after a small Labrador Retriever puppy, responds to touch and voice commands using built-in sensors and AI technology. It features recordings of real puppy sounds, and users can interact with it through simple commands like ‘speak’, to which Jennie responds with a bark. The puppy also comes with a smartphone app that allows users to name the pet, customise its settings, and track interactions. 

To expand on Jennie’s design, Tombot collaborated with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, known for its animatronic expertise. According to the company, the team used complex fabrics to create nuanced facial expressions and behaviors that resonate with users.

According to Tombot, Jennie’s design and features are intended to meet the desires of older adults with dementia and other people facing intellectual fitness issues such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.  

“Jennie” was recently unveiled at CES 2025 via Tom Stevens, co-founder and CEO of Tombot. According to a Reuters report, Tombot is expected to go on sale by the end of 2025 and will charge $1,500 per unit, or be sold through rental models for establishments such as assisted living facilities.
