Linux author Linus Torvalds has released a new edition of the Linux kernel after seven candidate editions.
Although he thought about creating an eighth candidate edition for Linux 5.8 last week, Torvalds On Sunday said “it’s not worth waiting another week when there are no big worries.”
Linux 5.8 replaces the latest Linux 5.7 solid kernel and includes all the settings that were removed from the 5.8 kernel merge windows. As Linux 5.8 won a strangely higher number of merge requests in its merge window, Torvalds said it was one of the largest versions of Linux to date in terms of number of validations and close to Linux 4.9.
For new settings and features, Linux Kernel 5.8 comes with several updates that come with security, memory management, hardware support, new drivers, and more.
Some of the most notable additions come with Thunderbolt 4.0 support, Arm-64 security, support for starting Power 10 processors, and power-driving force for recent AMD processors. Linux 5.8 also adds innovations to AMD Radeon open source graphics driving forces and exFAT Microsoft driving forces.
Users interested in downloading the latest edition of the Linux kernel can download it from the official website, however, it will still take some time for the kernel to reach other popular Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Arch Linux and Linux Mint.
