LG Unveils 3 New OLED Gaming Monitors, World’s First 5K2K Foldable Model

LG’s latest pre-CES 2025 announcement finds the brand unveiling a trio of premium big-screen OLED gaming monitors — including the world’s first 5K2K-resolution model to support LG’s unique ‘bendable’ technology.

This 5K2K foldable monitor, where you can adjust the curvature of your screen between 900R and flat to suit other sitting positions or usage scenarios, is the UltraGear 45GX990A. LG, which is already a proud winner of 3 innovation awards at CES 2025, adding the overall award for “Best Innovation,” describes the 45-inch 45GX990A as “an all-in-one gaming monitor powered by LG webOS. “

The presence of webOS alerts us to the fact that the 45GX990A can be used for both video streaming and gaming, making its ability to curve or flatten your screen even more talented.

Both the bendable 45GX990A and a new non-bending 45GX950A sibling feature 5,120 x 2160 resolutions, creating a 21:9 native aspect ratio, and both are certified for low blue light emissions, reducing eye strain during extended gaming sessions. Their screens are fitted with LG’s proprietary Anti-Glare and Low Reflection coating, too, to make it easier for gamers to see everything that’s going on, even in bright room settings.

The 45GX990A and 45GX950A also both feature the second generation of LG’s Dual-Mode technology, enabling them to offer customisable aspect ratios (21:9 or 16:9) and multiple (39, 34 or 27-inch) image sizes, with one-touch switching between eight different screen resolution and refresh rate combination presets. This makes it easy to adapt the monitor’s output to different game genres as well as room configurations. So, for instance, while the new monitors will offer a native 165Hz refresh rate at the screens’ maximum 5120×2160 resolution, they can also run to a refresh rate of 330Hz if you lower the resolution to 2560×1080.

The UltraGear 45GX950A features a constant 800R curvature and a 5K2K local solution.

Both monitors also have a GtG reaction time of 0. 03 ms and their high-brightness OLED displays are True Black 400 rated under VESA’s DisplayHDR certification standard. Connectivity comes with HDMI 2. 1 and DisplayPort 2. 1 options, with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and NVidia G-Sync variable refresh rate systems, while available audio features now come with DTS Headphone:X.

The pixel size of these new 45-inch 21:9 OLED monitors is an impressive 125 pixels per inch, an RGBW sub-pixel layout, and a standout feature is a USB-C port that provides 90W of power for convenient charging of the device.

One difference between the new GX9 monitors, but still the fact that the GX990A is foldable while the GX950A is not, is that the GX950A’s locked curvature is 800R, making it more rounded than the GX990A, even in its excessive maximum setting. In fact, this extra curvature also allows LG to claim “world first” prestige for the 45GX950A: apparently, it’s the world’s first 45-inch 5K2K OLED gaming monitor with 800R curvature and DisplayPort 2. 1 support! So now you know.

The 45GX950A is equipped with LG’s WebOS smart service, making it a true multi-purpose monitor … [+] despite its gaming focus.

While the 45-inch GX9s are the star attractions of LG’s CES 2025 gaming monitor announcements, the brand is also unveiling one other new UltraGear GX9 OLED model. The 39GX90SA is a 39-inch screen that is again configured in a 21:9 aspect ratio and boasts a (fixed) 800R level of curvature. It also retains the HDMI 2.1 port, a USB type C port, webOS smarts (so that you can stream video into it as well as playing games), 0.03ms response time, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro/Nvidia G-Sync VRR support found on the 45-inch GX9s. It’s earned the the same VESA DisplayHDR True Black rating of 400, too.

However, its refresh rate maxes out at 240Hz, with no need for dual-mode generation to boost it, and its resolution drops to WQHD compared to the WUHD point of 45-inch TVs. Its DisplayPort connection is also only a 1. 4 edition, rather than a 2. 1 edition.

Pricing for LG’s new trio of UltraGear monitors hasn’t been released yet, but if it happens soon, I’ll upload it to this article.
