St. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Emerging hitter Kevin Kiermaier hit a single in the inning and the Tampa Bay Rays finished the streak of six consecutive Toronto wins, beating the Blue Jays 2-1 on Saturday night.
Both groups scored a point in the fifth and remained 1-all until the team started on the 10th with an automatic runner at the base moment.
After Anthony Band (1-0) allowed Travis Shaw to connect a direct play in the most sensible half, the Rays won to regain the lead in the American League East.
“We know we’re smart and we bring that trust in the box every day,” Kiermaier said.
A role and a walk put the runners in the corners. Kiermaier defeated Michael Brosseau and Anthony Bass (1-1).
“It’s ready,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said of Kiermaier. “Hitting through pinches is not easy.”
The Blue Jays were ready for their first seven-game winning streak since 2016. Toronto won the first game of the series on Friday 6-5 in 10 innings.
Toronto left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu allowed a run, three hits and struck out six in innings. He allowed three runs and 10 hits in 22 innings in his last four starts.
“I think we should be informed about how to close those kind of games and win those close fights,” Ryu said through a translator. “Today, unfortunately, that didn’t happen. But from the pitcher’s point of view, we have to faint with the mindset that we’re going through to keep this game tight.”
Rays player Aaron Slegers struck out five out of 4 with no hit in his first start since July 10, 2018 while in Minnesota. He allowed a base runner, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who reached a mistake.
Slegers Tampa Bay’s 10th starting pitcher this season. The Rays have seven pitchers, adding starters Charlie Morton and Yonny Chirinos to the disabled list.
Sean Gilmartin replaced Slegers in the fifth and gave two tickets before allowing the Blue Jays’ first hit, a bachelor with a punch through Joe Panik who loaded the bases. Cavan Biggio gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with a 3-2 home run with two outs.
Gilmartin returned from the chosen education for a moment with the team this season.
Tampa Bay tied at 1 later in the fifth with a rolling drivingman from Manuel Margot.
Biggio tried to score from the moment in a wild draw in the seventh but thrown into the plate. He had chosen and swept the moment, turning him into 18 out of 18 base volley attempts in his career.
PICO INJURY
Rays’ RHP Charlie Morton (right shoulder inflammation) is not surprised by the eruption of injuries in baseball. “I think a lot of other people have predicted that,” he said. “It’s frustrating, but I think this year we were aware of the dangers.”
