“This is occupied Palestinian land. . . Israel interferes with the tasks of Waqf members. “
“Israel has no sovereignty over jerusalem’s holy sites,” Jordan’s foreign minister said Tuesday night, reacting to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s comments about the Temple Mount.
“This is occupied Palestinian land,” Ayman Safadi in an interview with a Jordanian newspaper.
“Israel has no sovereignty over the Al Aqsa Mosque, it is a Muslim place of worship, the Jordanian Waqf has full authority over control of the compound,” the minister said.
Safadi, however, expressed hope for a return to calm, saying “the way forward is to respect the prestige quo. “
He accused the Jewish state of “complicating all waqf measures for security at the Al Aqsa Mosque and interfering with the tasks of members of the organization. obstacles in their way. “
A month and a half ago, a request from Jordan to increase the number of Waqf guards on the Temple Mount to about 50 was rejected, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said on Tuesday.
It has also been reported that in weeks, six Hamas-backed Waqf guards have been driven off the Temple Mount.
“There is no replacement or new progression in the Temple Mount scenario: Israel’s sovereignty is preserved,” the prime minister said.
“All decisions related to the Temple Mount will be made through the Israeli government for considerations of sovereignty, freedom of faith and security, and not under pressure from foreign or political factors,” he said.
The Jordanian minister made the remarks on the eve of Friday’s White House assembly between King Abdullah and US President Joe Biden, and the Jerusalem factor is expected to be one of the main themes of the assembly.
