The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational has come to an end after a dominant showing from the two Chinese teams at the tournament. JD Gaming came out on top in the final, beating fellow Chinese team Bilibili Gaming 3-1 to take home the trophy and $50,000 first place prize.
The two finalists faced off in the competition and many feared that the final would go down the same way, with JD Gaming taking a dominant 3-0 victory. However, this is not the case. The two groups split the first two matches of the BO5 series, making the final BO3 and things seemed much more balanced than in the previous match.
Then, JD Gaming took the lead in the third game, putting them in the game and on the league point. This would be the turning point of the match, as JD would go on to win the fourth match and the championship, quite convincingly after an opening bout against Drapassn gave them a huge advantage.
Throughout the entire tournament, it was clear that both teams from China were a step ahead of most of the competition. The only other team that pushed both Chinese rosters to the limit was T1 from Korea, but ultimately they too fell to both JD and Bilibili in the later stages of the competition.
Bilibili Gaming had to go through the Play-In portion of the tournament, but never looked in danger in the early rounds, beating Rainbow7 and Golden Guardians to advance to the main stage. They then beat Cloud9 in a dominant 3-0 win before losing. to JD Gaming in the semifinals of the best organization 3-0. They would then defeat G2 Esports 3-1, Gen. G Esports 3-0, and T1 3-1 to set up a rematch against JD in the finals.
JD’s route to the final was much easier, coming in as the top seed in China they automatically booked a spot in the bracket stage and took full advantage of that. While their opponents in the final had to play seven best of threes to make it that far, JD played just three, beating Golden Guardians 3-0, Bilibilli 3-0 and just making it past T1 with a 3-2 scoreline to reach the final.
Now that MSI is over, all groups will return to their local leagues to compete for a spot in the World Championship later this year. With this result, China will undoubtedly be the favorite region of the World Cup, but in League of Legends, nothing. It’s safe.
